Guinea pigs daily diet consists of 80% hay, 5% guinea pig pellets and 15% fresh greens and veggies and water available 100% of the time.
At the moment, none. Otherwise, guinea pigs. However, we have been known to take any small animal such as rodents, bunnies, chinchillas, sugar gliders, hamsters, etc.
We do not accept cats or dogs.
Our current adoption fee is $55 per bonded pair of guinea pigs, $45 for single guinea pigs. All proceeds go towards keeping our current and future pigs happy and healthy.
Yes absolutely! Guinea pigs are herd animals and do best as pairs or in a group (called a herd). If you've got a newly single pig, we can help your pig meet and bond with a new pig friend. Finding a new friend to get along with can take a little bit of time. Please plan on at least a 2 week process to meet new pigs, slowly introduce them to each other to ensure a good bond that will last years to come. Our match up and new pig adoption fee is $75.
Many come from situations where families have purchased 2 guinea pigs from a store or a person who has not correctly identified if both guinea pigs are boys or girls and within a couple weeks, 2 guinea pigs become 4 or more. Some guinea pigs get dumped outside of a house when someone moves for a caring neighbor or realtor to find. Some guinea pigs get dumped in parks to fend for themselves - which they can't since they are so domesticated and a good person calls us to help. Some come from homes where pet parents have fallen ill and family is unable to help.
Probably. Just check with your tax advisor. We're happy to give you a receipt. Please email us at secondchancecavyrescue@gmail.com to request one.
Yes! Guinea pigs are constantly eating so they are constantly pooping. As long as it is well formed in a little oval shape and evenly brown in color, scoop it and add it to your compost pile or directly into the garden! If it looks too dry, too wet, tear shaped or not "normal" it may warrant a visit to the vet to make sure your pig's GI tract is working properly.
